The Librarian's Apprentice

The Great Library exists somewhere between worlds and times. It shifts, it changes, and it guards its secrets well - but you are its apprentice, and today you have six documents to find before your Librarian runs out of patience.

The Librarian's Apprentice is a solo journaling game that takes you through an infinite, ever-shifting library in under two hours. You build the library from playing cards as you go - every room different, every visit a new maze. The rules fit on a single trifold brochure. The rest of the package fills in the world: a bestiary, roll tables packed with descriptions and events, patron prompts for the library's inhabitants, and a character sheet designed to look like an actual bookmark. You also have a familiar - a cattacoon, a glow mite, or something stranger - who helps when things go dark.

The system (Firelights, by Fari RPGs) uses playing cards and two D6. Each session generates something different. Over 60 million possible room combinations, according to the tables. Winner of the 2024 CRIT Award for Best Solo TTRPG.
