Game of the Month (July): Land of Eem

What is this game?

Land of Eem is a lighthearted fantasy TTRPG by Ben Costa and James Parks, published by Exalted Funeral. Picture the epic scope of Lord of the Rings blended with Muppets-style whimsy and a dash of Mad Max. Built on a simple d12 mechanic with degrees of success and failure, it drops you into a world of color and decay - a land where the great civilizations of old crumbled at the hands of the mysterious Gloom King.

Why do we love it?

Because Eem proves that lighthearted doesn't mean shallow. You choose from 16 folk species - from gelatinous goos to skeletons - and 6 classes, each with 20 unique abilities, so no two characters ever feel alike. Best of all, every adventure comes with a tone dial: Hijinks, Derring-Do, or Doom & Gloom. The same table can play a Muppets-style caper one week and a grim epic the next. We think that's a stroke of genius.


Why is it our game of the month?

Land of Eem has had a remarkable run: three ENnie Awards, including Best Family Game, and the Origins Award for Roleplaying Game of the Year. Deservedly so. This is the game we recommend to families, first-time GMs, and veteran groups who simply want to have fun again.
