The complete Stonetop: both books and all five maps

Stonetop is a hearth fantasy roleplaying game set in an Iron Age that never was. You play the exceptional people of a small village at the edge of the known world: not wandering mercenaries, but neighbours, with family at home and a harvest to bring in. When something stirs in the hills, you are the ones who step up. This set brings together the two hardcover volumes in their slipcase and the separately published Map Pack, so everything the game was designed around arrives in one box.

What's inside

- Book I: Stonetop. The rules, the nine playbooks (from the Marshal who guards the walls to the Lightbearer who carries a sliver of the divine), the village itself with rules for steering it through the seasons and improving it over the years, and extensive guidance for the GM.
- Book II: The Wider World and Other Wonders. An extensive almanac of the regions, settlements, wild creatures and old ruins around Stonetop, plus a collection of arcana: unique magic items with their own rules for unlocking their secrets.
- Two hardcovers of around 600 pages each, in a sturdy slipcase, illustrated throughout by Lucie Arnoux.
- The Map Pack: five large prints (about 40 x 50 cm) of Lucie's hand-drawn maps, in a weathered finish: the village of Stonetop, the Vicinity, the World's End, the trading town of Marshedge and the mining town of Gordin's Delve.

How it plays

Stonetop is Powered by the Apocalypse: you roll two six-sided dice, add a stat, and the result tells you whether things go well, get complicated or go wrong. It started life as a setting for Dungeon World and grew into a standalone game over ten years of playtesting by designer Jeremy Strandberg. The heart of it is the rhythm between home and away: expeditions into the unknown, with proper rules for overland travel, and the return to a village that changes because of what you did out there. Short runs of two to four sessions work, but the game shines over a dozen sessions or more.

Good to know

- For a GM and two to five players. Sessions run about three to four hours.
- You only need a handful of six-sided dice.
- Netherbook sells Stonetop as this complete set, so you never have to hunt for the maps separately.
- A fit for groups who love fantasy with a human scale: more harvest festival and hill fort than dragon hoard.
