The sun is old and red, and nobody expects it to last. This is Jack Vance's Dying Earth: a world at the far end of time where magic and forgotten technology have blurred into the same thing, where every wizard is scheming against every other wizard, and where good manners will get you further than a sword.
The Dying Earth Boxed Set brings that setting to the Dungeon Crawl Classics table. Magic works the Vancian way it was always meant to, with spells that are jealously hoarded and rivals who will happily curse you over a slight from thirty years ago. The grudge token system puts that pettiness right into the rules, so an insult at a dinner party can echo for the rest of the campaign.
Inside the box you get three books and a map of the Dying Earth by Doug Kovacs. The Player's Libram introduces four new classes, the magician, the vat thing, the wayfarer and the witch. The Primer of Practical Magic is a fat book of spells and spellcasting for a world where sorcery is currency. The Intimate Anatomy of Several Creatures and Personages fills out the bestiary and the patrons who might take an interest in you, whether you want them to or not.
This is a supplement rather than a standalone game, so you will want the Dungeon Crawl Classics core rulebook alongside it. If you like your fantasy sly, decadent and just a little cruel, this box is where DCC goes strange.
